Sustainability
As Wakatere enters the seventh season of the club's Sustainability programme, we are more determined to educate, develop, and expand on our initiatives in 2024 and beyond.
We are fortunate to be located on Auckland’s beautiful east coast. The ocean we look out onto is more than just our playground, it is part of who we are, and we are committed to doing our part to look after this precious resource that serves us all.
EcoMatters Environment Trust and Auckland Council came on board at the 2023 Toyota Opti Nationals Champs at Wakatere and showcased our zero waste regatta initiatives in this video -
Many thanks to our sailors, volunteers, sponsors, and green team for their continued efforts
Sailors for the Sea
Wakatere has targeted specific regattas by registering with the Sailors for the Sea Clean Regattas for certification since 2018. This is the world's leading sustainability certification for water-based events. It assists us to adopt standards that flow onto general practice at the club by setting a benchmark.
The action points dovetail into our club Strategic Document - to maintain and develop the Club's physical environment and infrastructure and to create a strong sense of club consciousness, diversity, and community.
Clean Club YNZ
Three stars hs been awarded to Wakatere for attaining the top level environmental focus as part of the YNZ Clean Club programme.
Congratulations to our members, volunteers & supporters for all the work put in place to lift the daily standards at our club. Special thanks to Delayne Salthouse who put sustainability on the committee agenda at every monthly meeting since 2018. It's an ongoing team effort, club effort, regatta effort. Water Usage
While are dams are currently full in Auckland, water is precious and expensive and we endeavour to minimize the usage at Wakatere following these guidelines:
Only use hoses with trigger nozzles (all club hoses will have these fitted)
30 seconds maximum time to wash any members' boats
Allocate an adult to run the hose when washing kids boats to conserve water
