General LTS questions to Learn to Sail Coaching Coordinator. Please add 'LTS' in your subject line.
The Wakatere LTS courses are led by Yachting New Zealand qualified Learn to Sail instructors and follow the Yachting New Zealand Learn to Sail curriculum.
JUNIORS use the club Optimist dinghies for LTS courses. 8yrs of age is the minimum age to join a Wakatere junior course. Most courses are run as a 4 or 5 block in the school holidays.
SENIORS & YOUTH age groups use club RS Feva dinghies. The Fevas are a 2 person boat and you will learn both helm and crew skills. There is a Level 1 course for complete beginners and a Level 2 for those with some sailing experience. Your coach can allocate pairs. Adult courses usually run on Saturdays.
All LTS sailors must be able to swim 50 metres unaided wearing a PFD (personal floating device) and sailing gear and must be available to attend all of the days of the course to obtain the course certificate in order to move onto other Wakatere sailing programmes.
