Awesome last day of the OK interdoms |
|
We had a great last day of the OK interdoms for the final race, with a 12-18 knot southerly and sunny skies.
Mike Williams took one for the Aussies winning the race with some clever sailing in the patchy and tidal conditions, securing third place for himself. Paul Rhodes (Gaucho) had a great comeback to finish second in the race and secure second overal for himself. Ben Morrison had already won the championship with a race to spare so elected to watch and give a bit of stick from the patrol boat.
It was an awesome regatta, big thanks to all the volunteers especially Janet Watkins, Janine Page-Wood and Dean and Chris Coleman for all their hard work and help over the weekend.
Also a big thankyou to our sponsors, who made all of this possible!

Ben Morrison wins OK Interdoms |
|

Ben Morrison has won the OK Interdoms with one race up his sleeve. Wakatere produced another stunning day with 15-20 knots from the SW and sunny skies. It nearly all come undone for Ben in the first race, everyone started at the boat in a very strong tide (even stronger than yesterday) with the aim of tacking and heading to the shoreline as soon as possible, Ben had an average start and then had to do a couple of turns on top of that, but he fought back to finish 3rd in the race. Paul Rhodes extended from a great start to win the race.
In the second race the tide had slackened a bit and the lefty's came into play, Ben had a good start and played the shifts well to move into the lead, which he never reliquished and gave himself enough lead over his rivals to take out the regatta.
Brad Douglas had another consistent day and keeps his second position with Paul Rhodes just behind him in third overall. Mike Williams and Roger Blasse from Australia are following up in 4th and 5th.

Tricky second day for the OK Interdoms |
|
It was a tough day on the water today, we thought we saw tidal conditions yesterday but today was intense! As one sailor said, I don't like sailing in a river. Turns out Ben Morrison doesn't mind it though scoring a 1,3 to extend his lead to 8 points.
Brad Douglas did just enough to keep his second spot in the shifty conditions, as the 30 degree shifts combined with the tide spread the fleet out. Paul Rhodes rounds out the Kiwi top three and is the first Wellington Rep.
Roger Blasse and Mike Williams are the first Aussies in 4th and 5th respectively and both are from Black Rock YC in Melbourne, with Mark Skelton from Wangi RSL SC at Lake Maquaire close behind.
Tonight the sailors are uping the ante on the deck with not only beer but also pizza!
