Opening Day 2009 - Starlings PDF Print E-mail

Great to see a fleet of 12 Starlings sailing at Wakatere on Opening Day in fantastic conditions, I don't think I heard any complaints about the weather.

It was fantastic to have three of the group finishing first  equal on points, with Mahia and James both having a 1st and 3rd, and Matthew having two 2nds.

If Opening Day was an indication of what is in store for the season, its going to be a great one.

Hi all starlings sailors,

We had a good turnout to training on Wed with Alex Munro and Jacob joining in. Alex
has just bought a good wooden starling 1135 that used to be raced at Wakatere 5 or
so years ago by Mathew Knox. I understand he will be doing the nationals in
Lyttelton 2010.

Hoping the blustery wet conditions will pass to the East by Sunday for a fine days
sailing for the club opening on Sunday. Finn Drummond will be firing the canon to
get the season under way and starts will be controlled by the tower on shore instead
of Waka. Some thing different.

Finn and Frankie have sailed optis, starlings and had and excellant season in 420
and 470 both locally and overseas. Thery are applying for funding from Toyota to
assist in their sailing development over the next few years aiming towards a gold at
the London Olympics.

CU all Sunday.
Lets have every starling on the water for the Club opening day races, 1st of the
season.

Starling Winter Champs 2009 PDF Print E-mail

Chris outsailed everyone to comfortably win the 2009 Winter Champs from World Splash Champion Declan Burn with Logan a very close third. The standard of the fleet was high and a number of others pushed these guys hard all the way in winds that averaged around 18kns for the three days. Being early in the season most of the sailors no doubt found the going tough physically and their rustiness accounted for the number of capsized that were observed.

James had some great races including a 2nd and one were he started last and past more than half the fleet of nearly 50 sailors. Matthew sailed consistently, managing to finish in the top 20 in every race, although two were lost with an OCS and a Z flag. Mahia and Lucy both had some good races but found the stronger winds to be a little tough this early in the season.

1st Chris Steele (14pts), 2nd Declan Burn (24pts), 3rd Logan Dunning Beck (25pts), 16th James Roberts  (137pts), 18th Matthew Kempkers (147pts), 26th Mahia Pepper (224 pts), 29th Lucy Hawkins (268pts).
